Safi is known as one of the centers for this art and utilizes red clay to create the ceramic pottery. Clay is softened by hand, and formed using a potter's wheel which is powered by foot, using age old techniques. Pieces are dried in the sun then baked in kilns that are over 200 years old. All items are hand etched and painted. Artisans live in small villas made of concrete, which is a building material that is plentiful in Morocco and also insulates the residents from the extremely high summer temperatures and intense sun. In speaking to a Moroccan artisan, one will find that he/she is very proud of their art form. If the father is an artisan then the son will almost always learn the father's trade.
