Tufted rugs differ from hand knotting: The rug design is drawn onto a frame-stretched canvas. Using a hand-operated tool called a tufting gun, the rug maker punches strands of wool into the canvas backing, filling in the pattern with appropriate colors of wool. Once the rug design is fully piled, the rug is removed from the frame and a jute or cotton fabric is glued to the back. This method allows rugs to be made much more quickly than by hand-knotting, but the designs tend to be more contemporary and with less attention to detail.
